Heart & Parcel
A community cookbook
Heart & Parcel provide creative cooking and English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) sessions to women looking for alternatives to traditional classroom-based learning.
Having brought over 150 women together through a shared passion for food and language, Heart & Parcel decided to mark the occasion by creating their first cookbook. The publication’s design would need to combine written stories, memories, and home-cooked recipes with intimate editorial photos taken by Rebecca Lupton.
We created a beautiful collection of illustrated patterns to introduce each recipe section. Our design process was inspired by Asian and European ingredients and textiles.
Our typesetting takes its lead from international food packaging. Alternative language titles are presented alongside English language versions. This detail brings a sense of cultural diversity to the text.
We established a celebratory colour palette based on tones found in the book’s editorial photos, and a balanced but varied layout that holds the reader’s attention.
“It was important to have designers who understood the value and focus of our project. Minute Works provided a professional, sensitive service. They approached our cookbook with care and depth. We’re beyond satisfied with the results!”
The project’s extended community turned up to commemorate the book’s launch at the Whitworth art gallery.
This self-published project was able to secure distribution across Greater Manchester. Pick up your copy (while stocks last) from: Épicerie LUDO, HOME, Manchester Art Gallery, Milk & Honey, NORDIE, Station Hop, or TROVE.
Profits from sales are helping Heart & Parcel provide free ESOL classes and future community-led projects.
